Situated in the heart of the North western Lake District fells,
The Cottage in the Wood is walker and cyclist friendly and we offer
advice and directions for all outdoor enthusiasts.
There are Lake District walks for all levels and abilities and many
can be accessed directly from the front door of the hotel. Being
on the slopes of Whinlatter forest there are many purpose made trails
and footpaths leading through the woodland.
Quarter of a mile from the hotel is the Whinlatter Forest Centre
which is run by the Forestry Commission. They have a visitor centre
and tearooms and can offer a wealth of advice on different walks
around the area.
Below are a few of our favourite Lakeland walks for different abilities from
the hotel door - leave the car and venture out onto the Lake District fells:
- Seat How - A moderate walk of 3 miles or so which takes in marvellous
views across Keswick, Borrowdale and the Helvellyn mountain range
- Lord's Seat - A moderate high level walk of five miles with a
relatively sheltered ascent. Provides views over the Solway Firth
and southern Scotland
- Grisedale Pike - A moderate to hard walk that climbs to 1640ft
taking in some of he most dramatic views of the Lake District
The Coledale Horseshoe - A favourite of experienced walkers. Allow
5-6 hours for this hard but rewarding classic. Accessing the route
from 'The Cottage' breaks up the long haul up from Braithwaite
In addition to the wonderful variety of walks, the area is also popular for
cycling with sign posted routes through the forest. Whinlatter forest park
also provides an orienteering challenge. We offer a drying room and secure
garaging for cycles. Packed lunches are available for those embarking on a
day's adventure. Return to a warm and cosy hotel, log fires and a hot (or strong!)
drink.
