The Cottage in the Wood is nestled in the middle of the Whinlatter
forest Park, overlooking the awesome Skiddaw mountain range. Whinlatter
is situated only 5 miles from the Lake District market town of Keswick
on Derwentwater and 8 miles from the historic Cumbrian town of Cockermouth.
Keswick is a picturesque Lakeland town which sits on the Northern
edge of Derwentwater - England's widest lake.
It is near to many of the Lake District's impressive fells including
Helvellyn, Blencathra, Scafell and of course the mighty Skiddaw.
Skiddaw is one of the oldest mountain ranges in Europe and at just
over 3000ft is the 3rd highest mountain in England.
Though the town is a centre of excellence for walkers, Keswick also
offers something for everyone - a wide range of shops, art galleries,
a museum, leisure centre, cafes and a cinema.
There are plenty of activities including the Pencil museum (Pencil's
were invented in Keswick), lake cruises on Derwentwater, the famous
Theatre by the Lake, the ancient and mystic Castlerigg stone circle
(or Druid's Circle to the locals) and much more. You can watch cricket
on 'England's loveliest cricket ground', see a Lakeland rugby match,
go fishing in the River Greta or sail on Derwentwater or Bassenthwaite
Lake.
Cockermouth to the West was the birthplace of the Lakeland poet
William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian - of Mutiny on the Bounty
- was at school here. There is a historic castle belonging to the
Egremont family or you can visit the Jenning's brewery tour.
Continuing over Whinlatter pass and through the forest brings you
to the beautiful Lakeland village of Lorton. You can then head down
Lorton valley to either Loweswater or turn towards Crummock Water
and Buttermere - and some say to the most stunning Lake District
views.
After Buttermere drive back over the typically Lakeland Newland's
pass and through Newland's valley. A lovely drive in any weather.
