The Summer wasn’t at all bad, however Autumn has been absolutely wonderful. We’re so familiar with the leaves changing and the Forest turning to all shades of green, brown and gold.

Following the Larch harvesting last year, our squirrels stopped visiting. The canopy of trees that the squirrels used to move around had been removed. Thankfully, a new route to our feeders has been discovered by the little chappies, and it doesn’t involve crossing the road. So, it’s much safer and they seem to be flourishing. …

The Game Season Cometh. I have indelible memories of the Game season. I started work in the Savoy kitchens on the 1st August 1972.
Our track record for using and promoting everything good about Cumbrian food speaks for itself. In 2010 we won the local Tourism Taste Cumbria award and went on to take the title for a Taste of England’s North West. The following year we represented the North West in the Enjoy England awards and came away with silver.
Whinlatter offers a host of wild foods. It’s not the best for fungi as it is predominantly a coniferous forest. Just the same, we have a smattering of fungi over the year, not all of which are edible.
The Autumn is an exciting time for us here in the Lakes and Whinlatter. The Forest begins to change colour, the bracken turns to brown and we have a multitude of fungi around. As you might expect, the wildlife is busy ‘stocking larders’.
